Cairns — 8 nights

A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Bring the kids along to Scuba & Snorkeling and Esplanade Boardwalk. Step out of the city life by going to Nature & Wildlife Tours and Billy Tea Safaris. Change things up with these side-trips from Cairns: Palm Cove (Palm Cove Jetty, Palm Cove Beach, &more). And it doesn't end there: brush up on your military savvy at The Australian Armour & Artillery Museum, admire the masterpieces at Samurai Gallery Australia, observe the fascinating underwater world at Cairns Aquarium, and admire the natural beauty at Botanical Gardens.

Canberra to Cairns is an approximately 6.5-hour flight. You can also drive; or do a combination of bus and train. Prepare for much warmer weather when traveling from Canberra in July: high temperatures in Cairns hover around 30°C and lows are around 20°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 16th (Sat) to allow enough time to fly back home.

An area defined by its close relationship with the ocean and its focus on the beach-going lifestyle, Cairns Region has a picture-postcard aesthetic that combines favorably with a relaxed, down-to-earth atmosphere. A relative small slither of land--4,135 sq km (1,597 sq mi)--the region nevertheless boasts a large number of attractive beaches, coastal enclaves, scenic towns, and close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef. The region revolves around the economic prosperity of its immaculate capital, the city of Cairns.
