Cairns — 6 nights
The Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef
A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.Step off the beaten path and head to Cairns Art Gallery and Behana Gorge Waterfall. Get some cultural insight at St Monica's Cathedral and Doongal Aboriginal Art Gallery Cairns. Spend the 13th (Mon) among aquatic life with a scuba or snorkeling tour. There's still lots to do: hunt for treasures at Rusty's Market, visit Other, admire the striking features of Freshwater Station, and admire the sheer force of Crystal Cascades.

An area defined by its close relationship with the ocean and its focus on the beach-going lifestyle, Cairns Region has a picture-postcard aesthetic that combines favorably with a relaxed, down-to-earth atmosphere. A relative small slither of land--4,135 sq km (1,597 sq mi)--the region nevertheless boasts a large number of attractive beaches, coastal enclaves, scenic towns, and close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef.
