The Castle of Óbidos is a well-preserved medieval castle located in the civil parish of Santa Maria, São Pedro e Sobral da Lagoa, in the municipality of Óbidos, Portuguese district of Leiria.HistoryÓbidos had its foundation in the existence of a fortified settlement, likely over the Luso-Roman castro and Roman oppidum (then civitas) on the hilltop, that was the mysterious Eburobrittium, once cited by Pliny the Elder as being situated between Collipo (near present-day Leiria) and Olisipo (Lisbon). Archeological surveys later resulted in the discovery of a forum, baths and other Roman structures near the settlement. The area was later settled by the Lusitanos (since the 4th century BC) and Romans in the first century, but later occupied by Visigoths during the 5th and 6th century and Muslims, who were responsible for fortifying the town in the 8th century.Make Castelo de Óbidos part of your personalized Obidos itinerary using our Obidos trip itinerary planner.

Fun night in a castle, but with modern amenities. It is not a normal hotel, so prepare yourself, but the grounds and the town make up for loosing out on some of the creature comforts we are used to from similarly priced hotels that aren't castles. The breakfast spot had everything you could want and then some and couldn't have prettier views or nicer staff. The rooms in the castle are private and quaint and offer some exclusive views only to hotel guests. We woke up ate breakfast, walked as much of the wall as was possible - which is a lot, and then hit the road for the next leg of our trip.

Charming location, but I missed some of the comforts such as extra blankets and tea making facilities in the room. Also, there is no bar or coffee area to get refreshments outside of mealtimes. Pack light as you'll have to carry your luggage from the car park
