Create an itinerary including Vianden Castle
Transport yourself centuries back in time at Vianden Castle, a medieval fortress and palace dating back to the 14th century. Before you enter, notice the guard towers--one white and one black--flanking the main structure. Walk through a total of five gates, including a drawbridge and a descending grid. Afterward, you'll come to the little palace, where you can see the armory and Byzantine hall with its beautiful trefoil windows. Next, find the great palace, the largest section of the castle, featuring a knights' hall. Perhaps the most significant section, however, is the Romanesque-style chapel, which boasts two floors with an opening in the middle and balconies for the nobles. • Informative and well illustrated meander through the castle. Will require pacing for moderately fit seniors like us as there are plenty steep gradients and steps. Very good film overview at the end...

  • Petting the castle’s chickens absolutely made my day. The chickens are so calm and friendly. The castle is interesting and we were all done within 2 hours. The cafe has a selection of pastries, drinks, and soup. We had soup, ice cream and eclair. There is a free toilet at the entrance and a bigger free restroom upstairs in the castle. There was plenty of parking when we arrived at 10am on a Saturday. It filled up when we left around 12:30pm. It costs 1€/hour and you walk strenuously uphill about 5 minutes to get to the castle. Card is accepted at the kiosk farther back in the parking lot. Press the white button on the kiosk for how many hours you want (press multiple times for more hours), then press the green button, and then hold your card up to pay. It was tricky to use.
  • A well preserved castle. Good views and well maintained. What i did not like, the audio guide was not loud enough in hallways, - app would have been a wiser choice If you have a stroller, be sure you get well trained in you gym before the visit. Many interesting parts were barricaded, and no one could access. The view from far away - outside was stunning.
