Padua is a picturesque city with a dense network of arcaded streets opening into large communal piazze (squares). Several bridges crossing the various branches of the Bacchiglione river, which once surrounded the ancient city walls like a moat. Padua is home to an 800-year-old university where Galileo Galilei once lectured. Most of the streets in the historic town center are narrow, quiet, and often made of cobblestones. This area is not very big, so most of its main sites can be easily explored on foot. Padua is the birthplace of architect Andrea Palladio, whose elegant 16th-century villas dot the surrounding countryside.
