Create an itinerary including Fort Lovrijenac
See the castle on a cliff, Fort Lovrijenac, one of Dubrovnik's most recognizable sights, and a detail from HBO's "Game of Thrones." Sitting 37 m (121 ft) above sea level, the fort dates back to 1018, when it was intended to protect the western part of Dubrovnik. Today, you can witness some of the events that take place at the site, which is sometimes compared with Gibraltar. Climb the 175 steps to the fort to see some of the best views of the city and the bay. Look for cannons that were designed by the leading local cannon caster of the epoch. A visit to Fort Lovrijenac represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Dubrovnik journey website to plot your vacation.

  • We had intended to do the walls of Dubrovnik but felt the 250kn entry per person was just too steep, so we thought the Fort was a good alternative. Entry here is not cheap either, 100kn per person...

  • Located just outside the Old Town, it offers amazing views of the City Walls, making it an ideal photo spot. But don’t just go for pictures, also enjoy the medieval vibes and rugged construction of the fort itself. The fort was crucial in defending Dubrovnik from Venetian fleets who sought to overtake the city in the 11th century. Climb up 175 steps to reach the upper level, and see the canons and a small chapel. Some brave travelers will sit on the edge of the fort’s walls for that perfect picture, but the steep cliffs and rough ocean kept us well behind the railing! Fun fact: the Croatian segment of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series takes place at Lovrijenac
  • Such a beautiful place. The fortress wall show centuries of history to inspire your senses. This is my third visit here and I will never get tired of it. If you are up for a little adventure (and physical work) go on a kayak tour. It truly is a beautiful way to see the island.
