The maze of specialty shops set up in Victorian-style, wood-and-red-brick building where South Melbourne Market resides offers everything from fruits to silver jewelry. Open since 1867, the market is Melbourne's longest-running one. Among the many stalls, you'll find fresh produce, internatioal cuisine such as dim sum and Turkish gozleme, gifts, housewares, and men's and women's fashions. You can also learn recipes and techniques in cooking classes that Melbourne chefs regularly host here. Coming from a country where fresh food are sold in wet market, it never ceases to amaze me how dry can the fresh market be and exist side by side with dry goods. You can find a bit of everything...

This is smaller than Queen Victoria Market but seems more popular and packed. Similar concept of a mix of crafts, retail, fresh seafood, fruits and veg and dried goods. But more towards the artsy...

I wish we had more time! Parking is an absolute headache unless you go to the parking station. So best if you're within walking distance. Once inside, the various food outlets make you wish you could buy an extra stomach to try it all! Produce is a little pricey, it's not my idea of a "bargain" Mecca. The vibe is pretty cool tho and everything is pretty tidy considering the amount of foot traffic. The seafood outlet is fantastic, staff are great and you can buy a hot meal as well as fresh seafood to take home. The deli next to it has an incredible variety of stuff, too comprehensive to even start listing. But if you want it, they probably have it. Stopped in a few clothing outlets and noticed an instant alterations shop as well. Definitely coming back. The surrounding neighbourhood is gorgeous yesteryear nostalgia and a joy to behold. Definitely worth exploring.

The most amazing place ever! The range of shops and goods for sale is outstanding! Apart from clothing and soft toys, shoes, phone accessories, jewellery etc ... all the usual market fare .... the range of food is outstanding! From fresh fruit and vegetables to top quality meats and seafood. Amazing! Plus gourmet coffee and nuts. Well worth a visit!
