Uncover the secrets of Melbourne’s rich history at Old Treasury Building, a museum featuring early city maps and a narrative of the first European settlement in the Port Philip District, which later developed into a thriving urban area. Housed in one of the finest 19th-century buildings in Australia, the museum also features a permanent exhibition exploring the themes of indigenous Victorians, Ned Kelly and his gang, and the Gold Rush. Displays inspired by the epic story of the Victorian gold discoveries showcase Melbourne’s history during its transformation from a struggling settlement town into a bustling international city. Make a stop here to see a dynamic combination of artifacts, images, and multimedia exhibits bringing history to life. The facade is currently under restoration but you can still visit on regular opening hours. I loved reading the history of Melbourne and seeing accompanying old historic photos and illustrations. The massive replica nugget on display is a nice bonus too.

This place is amazing! Quite apart from the beautiful old building designed by a 19 year old, the museum blew me away. It is underrated and a hidden gem. We found it by accident during Open House Melbourne and was astonished by the depth and detail in the history that was display. I highly recommend every Victorian/Australian visit this place. There was so much information with photos, original documents (the executioner’s book!), news articles and personal stories. The people who put this together should be commended, they have done a fantastic job - it is up-to-date within the last few years. It is not publicised very well and the map location pin is not accurate for the entrance, but it’s a must see! I want to go back.
