Hiking Trail · Hidden Gem · Nature / Park
Climb up 1,048 railroad ties along Koko Crater Railway Trail to reach the summit of this Hawaiian crater, famous for its views and a large botanical garden. The rail ties were installed over 60 years ago to help carry military supplies to bunkers at the top. Today, it's a popular hiking and running spot. From the summit, you can see three islands on a clear day. Be careful because certain parts of the railroad path are crumbling, and some are quite steep. Bad weather can make the hike dangerous. Take plenty of water and supplies, use good shoes, and bring sunscreen. • Demanding trail is more difficult than it first appears. The base starts fine but further up it can get difficult with the climb and the trail condition. Uneven footing with the rail ties...  more »
  • Are you up for challenge? This hike is one of my favorite for sunrise hike. The park is open 6a so need to park outside if planning to come earlier than that. Don’t forget to bring your flash...  more »

  • The hike up the railroad tracks is awesome! Every time I travel to Oahu, I hike up the crater. If you take your time, it is not too difficult. Make sure you take a lot of water. The view at the top is amazing! Be careful on the way down, some of the railroad ties are slippery. I recommend this hike to everyone I know. Enjoy the views while hiking up!
  • Overall, this is a very rewarding hike. It is more difficult than Diamond Head, but the challenge is part of the reward. The trail has railroad ties that offer good footing and there is room to pass others or take breaks. Views are fantastic. Recommend going early so the sun is at a more favorable angle for pictures and because there is no shielding from the sun's rays via trees or other vegetation. Parking lot allows for free parking and is a good meeting spot for a group.
