Founded in the 10th century as a Viking fishing village, Copenhagen has morphed into the cultural, political, and economic powerhouse of the country.
Step off the beaten path and head to Grundtvig Church (Grundtvigs Kirke) and Jaegerborg Dyrehave. Get a sense of the local culture at Frederiksborg Castle and Roskilde Domkirke. Change things up with these side-trips from Copenhagen: Mons Klint (in Moen), Viking Ship Museum (in Roskilde) and Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (in Humlebaek).
