The Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef

A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Step out of Cairns with an excursion to Palm Cove Beach in Palm Cove--about 32 minutes away. Spend the 3rd (Mon) among aquatic life with a scuba or snorkeling tour. On the 9th (Sun), give your taste buds a day to remember with a local gastronomic tour. There's much more to do: trek along Esplanade Boardwalk, see exotic creatures in open habitats at Billy Tea Safaris, indulge in some personalized pampering at some of the best spas, and head outdoors with Outdoor Activities.

Sydney to Cairns is an approximately 4.5-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a train. Traveling from Sydney in January, things will get a bit warmer in Cairns: highs are around 37°C and lows about 28°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 9th (Sun) to allow time to fly back home.

An area defined by its close relationship with the ocean and its focus on the beach-going lifestyle, Cairns Region has a picture-postcard aesthetic that combines favorably with a relaxed, down-to-earth atmosphere. A relative small slither of land--4,135 sq km (1,597 sq mi)--the region nevertheless boasts a large number of attractive beaches, coastal enclaves, scenic towns, and close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef. The region revolves around the economic prosperity of its immaculate capital, the city of Cairns.
