Kutchan-cho's reputation rests on two things: skiing and potatoes.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Oyunuma and Fukidashi Park. Get in touch with nature at Niseko Hanazono Resort and Mt. Yotei. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Kutchan-cho: Rusutsu Resort Ski (in Rusutsu-mura), Cape Kamui (in Shakotan-cho) and Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery (in Yoichi-cho). There's lots more to do: head outdoors with Niseko Village Ski Resort, hit the slopes at Niseko Annupuri International Ski Area, stop by Noboribetsu Dairy Farm, and explore the activities along Lake Toya.

Many visitors take a trip to Nozawaonsen-mura, a picturesque hot spring village in Nagano Prefecture, to get away from it all.

Yokohama

Once a small fishing town, Yokohama was one of the first ports to welcome foreign trade in the 19th century, after which it grew into Japan's second largest city and a bustling metropolis.
Give yourself a bit of retail therapy at Yokohama Minato Mirai 21 and Pola Museum of Art. Step out of the city life by going to Lake Tanuki and Jogasaki Coast. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Yokohama: Hase-dera Temple (in Kamakura), Nature & Wildlife Tours (in Fuji) and Ito (Jogasaki Suspension Bridge & Mount Omuro). You can drive from Nozawaonsen-mura to Yokohama in 5 hours. Prepare for somewhat warmer weather when traveling from Nozawaonsen-mura in January: high temperatures in Yokohama hover around 11°C and lows are around 3°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 17th (Tue) so you can travel to Toyooka.

Traveling by flight from Yokohama to Toyooka takes 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of subway and train; or drive. When traveling from Yokohama in January, plan for slightly colder days in Toyooka, with highs around 5°C, while nights are about the same with lows around 0°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 22nd (Sun) to allow time to drive to Nachikatsura-cho.

Nachikatsura-cho

Getting from Toyooka to Nachikatsura-cho by car takes about 5 hours. Other options: take a train; or do a combination of flight and train. Traveling from Toyooka in January, expect Nachikatsura-cho to be a bit warmer, temps between 11°C and 5°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 26th (Thu) early enough to go by car to Tanabe.

Tanabe

Considered a holy space where the gods once lived, the city of Tanabe teems with spiritual, cultural, and natural beauty.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Oyunohara - Original Kumano Hongu Taisha Site and Kumano Kodo Trail. Give yourself a bit of retail therapy at Kisaikan Farmers Market and Toretore Market Nanki Shirahama. Venture out of the city with trips to Shirahama-cho (Sandambeki Rock Cliff & Shirarahama Beach) and Tanizeno Tsuribashi (in Totsukawa-mura). Nichinan

Tourism in Nichinan, a town on Japan's southernmost island of Kyushu, flourishes thanks to the scenic Nichinan-Kaigan coastline, a stretch of secluded coves, islands, and tranquil beaches.
Start off your visit on the 30th (Mon): stop by Nichinan Brewery Center, then appreciate the extensive heritage of Obijyo Castle Ruins, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Udo Shrine, and finally get outside with Nichinan Coast.

Ibusuki

A coastal place of relaxation, Ibusuki stands as a hot spring resort on the southern tip of the peninsula.
Kick off your visit on the 31st (Tue): indulge in Japan's hot spring tradition at some of the top local onsens, take a memorable drive along JR Southernmost Nishioyama Station, then take some stellar pictures from Cape Nagasakibana, then take in the awesome beauty at Mt. Kaimondake, and finally stop by Ikeda Lake Paradise.
