The main tourist town in the Bay of Islands area, Paihia gives visitors a good range of accommodations, a convenient town center, long sandy beaches, and interesting architecture.
Venture out of the city with trips to Whangarei Falls (in Whangarei) and Pompallier Mission and Printery (in Russell). On the 22nd (Sun), Head underground at Ruakuri Cave, then explore the fascinating underground world of Waitomo Glowworm Caves, and then stroll through Ruakuri Walk. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 23rd (Mon): take in the views from Mangapohue Natural Bridge Walk, take in the dramatic scenery at Marakopa Falls, then Head underground at Caveworld, and finally relax and float downstream with a rafting and tubing tour.

The country's largest ski resort brings winter sports enthusiasts from all over New Zealand, while a series of short volcano walks as well as numerous alpine crossings make it easy to hike on your Whakapapa trip throughout the year.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Whakapapa: Tongariro National Park (Ohakune Old Coach Road & Horsemtrails) and River Rafting & Tubing (in Turangi). There's still lots to do: stroll through Tongariro Alpine Crossing, take in the dramatic scenery at Tawhai Falls, catch a ride with Tongariro Crossing Shuttles, and hike along Taranaki Falls.

Taupo

The resort town of Taupo lies on the banks of Lake Taupo, the largest body of water in the whole of Australasia.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Taupo: Rotorua (Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, Te Puia, &more). There's still lots to do: take in the dramatic scenery at Huka Falls Walkway, get interesting insight from Tours, get the adrenaline pumping with an extreme tour, and look for gifts at Huka Honey Hive.
