A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Atherton Tablelands and The Australian Armour & Artillery Museum. Venture out of the city with trips to Palm Cove (Hartley's Crocodile Adventures & Kayaking & Canoeing). Spend the 7th (Sun) among aquatic life with a scuba or snorkeling tour. Spend the 13th (Sat) wandering through the wild on a nature and wildlife tour. There's still lots to do: identify plant and animal life at Michaelmas Cay, cross one thing off your bucket list with a skydiving experience, take a memorable tour with Shaolin Junk Cruises, and admire the sheer force of Crystal Cascades.
