A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.

Get out of town with these interesting Cairns side-trips: Daintree Discovery Centre (in Cow Bay), Port Douglas (Four Mile Beach, Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas, &more) and Wangetti (Hartley's Crocodile Adventures & Rex Lookout). Spend the 1st (Fri) among aquatic life with a scuba or snorkeling tour. Spend the 14th (Thu) exploring nature at Daintree National Park. There's still lots to do: stroll through Esplanade Boardwalk, get a dose of the wild on a nature and wildlife tour, kick back and relax at Trinity Beach, and see the world from above with a helicopter tour.
