A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Kids will appreciate attractions like Hartley's Crocodile Adventures and Muddy's Playground. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Cairns: Palm Cove Beach (in Palm Cove) and Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas (in Port Douglas). Spend the 8th (Sat) among aquatic life with a scuba or snorkeling tour. Traveling from Dublin in July, expect Cairns to be somewhat warmer, temps between 30°C and 20°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 12th (Wed) so you can travel to Surfers Paradise.

The main appeal of Surfer’s Paradise can be identified from its name alone.
Bring the kids along to Sea World Theme Park and Surfer's Paradise Beach. Go for a jaunt from Surfers Paradise to Coomera to see Dreamworld about 32 minutes away. There's still lots to do: find something for the whole family at Warner Bros. Movie World and enjoy the sand and surf at Burleigh Heads Beach.

You can fly from Cairns to Surfers Paradise in 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a train. Traveling from Cairns in July, things will get a bit cooler in Surfers Paradise: highs are around 23°C and lows about 11°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 15th (Sat) early enough to travel to Sydney.
