Little more than a small town at the turn of the 20th century, Dushanbe grew rapidly during the Soviet era and now serves as the national capital and home to nearly 800,000 people.
Escape the urban bustle at Nurek Dam and Fann Mountains. Step off the beaten path and head to Hisor Fortress and Mevlana Yakub Charki Mosque. Change things up with these side-trips from Dushanbe: Ski Tourism Complex Safed Dara (in Tagob) and Hisor HIstorical and Cultural Preserve (in Hisor). There's lots more to do: get engrossed in the history at National Museum of Antiquities, get outside with Karatag Gorge, don't miss a visit to National Library, and get a taste of the local shopping with NOOR ART GALLERY.
