A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Relax by the water at Mission Beach and Palm Cove Beach. Take a break from the city and head to Atherton Tablelands and Trinity Beach. Get out of town with these interesting Cairns side-trips: Kuranda (Barron Falls & Australian Butterfly Sanctuary), Spas (in Palm Cove) and Agincourt Reef (in Port Douglas). There's lots more to do: take in the architecture and atmosphere at St Monica's Cathedral, get a dose of the wild on a nature and wildlife tour, explore the world behind art at Cairns Art Gallery, and identify plant and animal life at Mossman Gorge Centre.

Founded as a military outpost in 1826, Albany is the oldest town in Western Australia, just barely gaining this title by being settled two years earlier than Fremantle and Perth.
Get outdoors at Little Beach and The Gap and Natural Bridge. Albany's Historic Whaling Station and National Anzac Centre are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Change things up with a short trip to Greens Pool in Denmark (about 52 minutes away). It doesn't end there: enjoy the sand and surf at Middleton Beach and don't miss a visit to Albany Wind Farm.
