Experience plants and animals within the city at Botanical Garden and Zoo, a complex spanning 6.7 hectares (16.5 acres) featuring 600 animals from 130 species. Founded in 1960 on the Luchob riverbank, the zoo is the only institution of the kind in the country. Central Asia is represented by brown and black bears, Bactrian camel, wolves, and jackals. You'll also find lions, snow leopards, and jaguars here, as well as an indoor reptile section. • Similar to the English system to establish botanical gardens as stage locations throughout the former English Kingdom, the Soviet Union used to hoard plant species on the vast territory so that one would have enough reserves for a gene potential, in the event of bottlenecks in the case of sought-after crops. In Tajikistan there are even two such gardens, one at higher altitudes in Pamir, the other in the capital Dushanbe. It lost its original function as a genetic hoard after the independence of the country, but is nevertheless maintained quite neatly for leisure purposes. Particularly striking is the filigree large greenhouse, which is visible from afar. But the fact that the Botanical Garden has mutated into a pure park is not necessarily reprehensible, because the inhabitants of the rapidly growing city are likely to enjoy it or the most important urban greenery in a city with miserable air values. Only those greenhouses that were considered to be the cultivation of endemic species are looking forward to their end in their building material. As a substitute measure, it now seems to be trying to insert cultural-historical objects of the country (e.g. traditional buildings or even a kind of wedding palace), which does not necessarily bring the park a loss of value. - Added to the good rating, however, is the note that I did not like what is listed here as a zoo.

  • I don’t really approve of zoos even when they are well funded, well kept and where animal welfare is a priority - but Dushanbe zoo is none of these things. It should be closed down immediately.  more »
