Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Kandy

#1 of 195 in Things to do in Kandy
A World Heritage Site, Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic plays home to one of Buddhism's most important relics, the tooth of the Buddha himself. Originally constructed in 1595, the temple played a key role in the nation's history, as local tradition held that the right to rule to country lay with the one who possessed the Buddha relic. You can enter the main hall of the temple and admire its vaulted ceilings and columned hallways adorned with golden statues of elephants, likenesses of the Buddha, and scenes from his life. Though you can't actually see the tooth itself, you'll get a chance to observe the gold casket that encloses it. Afterwards, you can wander the rest of the temple complex and discover its array of shrines, halls, and displays. Plan my trip to Kandy with suggested itineraries provided by Inspirock.

  • A delightful early morning visit here. It wasn’t too busy at 8am! There is plenty to see, as well as the building housing the relic (which you can’t see), there is a museum, an interesting preserved e...  more »
  • part of the Buddhist culture, so when visiting Sri Lanka is recommended for a visit, put on a skirt, look, make take off their shoes and let into the temple, a separate building with an elephant mummy, a Building of Buddhists for abluising. Monkeys run around the temple. A lot of interesting things, but you need a sensible guide or read in advance on Wikipedia about this place, then the visit will be more conscious

  • in this is the one that is very unique and beautiful in every way. We are here talking about the Temple of Tooth Relic. This temple is very popular and most of the tourists coming to Sri Lanka come here definitely because of its uniqueness. Like many other popular places of Sri Lanka, this too comes in the world heritage sites and is marked so by UNESCO. The temple is spiritual and historical both. So, people come here are interested in both subjects. It is said that the tooth relic that the temple has is of Buddha. Also, there is this saying that one who will hold that tooth relic will be the governor of the kingdom. This temple is located in the city of Kandy.
  • It took over 3 hours by train from Colombo to get to Kandy to visit this place but it is well worth the journey. It is a truly wonderful experience. With hindsight I wish we had hired a guide as I'm sure we didn't fully understand everything. It was very busy with tourists, lots of children on school trips, families and other interesting people visiting this holy place. If you get the chance to visit you will not be disappointed by everything you see.
