Trip Planner: Europe / Spain / Balearic Islands / Majorca / Palma de Mallorca / Catedral de Mallorca
Standing proudly in the middle of the city, Catedral de Mallorca is a Gothic building with sandstone walls and flying buttresses that seemingly rise right out of the sea. Dominating over its surroundings, the building is 121 m (397 ft) long and 55 m (180 ft) wide and was constructed on a massive scale. Designed in the Catalan Gothic style, with numerous Northern European elements, the cathedral was begun in 1229 on the site of a pre-existing mosque, but finished only in 1601. Famed architect Antoni Gaudí participated in a renovation project at the beginning of the 20th century. Managing to complete only a few of his grand ideas, Gaudí quarreled with the contractors, then suddenly abandoned the project. Nevertheless, this vast cathedral remains a major architectural landmark well worth visiting. Catedral de Mallorca reviews
Lovely cathedral. Worth visiting inside. We didn't buy tickets online, just waited at the door and purchased them. Went on a Tuesday at 1pm and the line was only a couple minutes long. €8 pp. There's a free toilet inside as well. If you drive there's a parking garage off the highway next to the water. You exit right by the fountain and then can walk up to the cathedral and take in the view. There's a lot of tourist trap stuff there but no one in your face. The view on the way up is worth it and it's not much of a climb. We ended walking around the center after so overall about 3 hours of parking cost about €7.30. There's a machine you have to pay before you get to your car so take your ticket with you.
So big and beautiful! Get the audio guide if you want a more comprehensive tour. It was only an hour long. The outside was amazing! And some interesting artistic choices inside. There's a modern piece inside this centuries old church that makes you look twice and applaud the forward thinkers. And the Gaudí altar piece.. wow
