Standing proudly in the middle of the city, Catedral de Mallorca is a Gothic building with sandstone walls and flying buttresses that seemingly rise right out of the sea. Dominating over its surroundings, the building is 121 m (397 ft) long and 55 m (180 ft) wide and was constructed on a massive scale. Designed in the Catalan Gothic style, with numerous Northern European elements, the cathedral was begun in 1229 on the site of a pre-existing mosque, but finished only in 1601. Famed architect Antoni Gaudí participated in a renovation project at the beginning of the 20th century. Managing to complete only a few of his grand ideas, Gaudí quarreled with the contractors, then suddenly abandoned the project. Nevertheless, this vast cathedral remains a major architectural landmark well worth visiting. • By far the most iconic representation of Mallorca. The surrounding area boasts of cafes and kiosks and that distinctive flair of Spain.  more »
  • Like all cathedrals-grand and fascinating in all its splendor. Myself, I got a little extra for some with beautiful painted and adorned walls, among other things depicting fish, this was what I found most unique and here I stood for a long time. It has quite limited opening hours, closed Sundays and closes early (at 16 I think it was) even on weekdays which I experienced as more limited than in many other countries. In the surrounding area you can find the beach, some shops and a different attraction.

  • So it's pretty outside and for that I cant knock it. But to pay I think it was 8-10 euros to go in. Nah not cool. Especially as a believer I wanted to go into pray. I know they have to raise funds somehow but not like this. Sad times I really was looking forward to it. Never got to see the inside. :(
  • One of the most beautiful Basilicas we have ever seen. Be prepared to spend some time here to see everything, especially the side altars. The historic artifacts and statues are magnificent.
