Dobsinska Ice Cave, Dobsina

3.7
Tour subterranean tunnels filled with a host of formations at Dobsinska Ice Cave, part of a World Heritage-listed series of caverns. Tucked away in a secluded part of the Western Carpathian Mountains, the cave reaches nearly 1.5 km (0.9 mi) back into the rock. Join a guided tour, the only way to access the cave, and get up-close looks at towering stalagmites, hanging stalactites, and other ice structures as you walk the tour path. By volume, the ice makes it one of the largest caves of its kind in the world. Temperatures within hover around freezing year-round and the ground is slippery, so dress accordingly and wear sensible walking shoes. • The cave is already worth seeing, but only as a group tour to visit. The price is outrageous (3,50€ parking for a car, 8€ one-trip p.p. and 10€ for a photo permit). The lead then went about 30 minutes. It should also be noted that from the parking lot you still have to walk about 1km with many meters of altitude. The start times of the guides did not suit us, we just came to the lead which, according to the poster below, should only start in 20 minutes. Also, we were only told after the purchase (despite buying tickets in English) that the tour is only available in Slovak. Only for groups of more than 30 people there will be English tours by appointment. QR codes that led to homepages with the introduction of guided tours in different languages were not given to us, but only discovered after the tour rather by chance. The cave is already beautiful, and since we did not understand the guide we could take at least a few more cell phone pictures from the wrist. 2 guides paid attention to the fact that no one could take pictures. Due to the combination of high price/short tour, I would not recommend this excursion to anyone.

  • It's a very nice ice cave. The tour is pretty short (less than 30 min). We took the English tour but haven't managed to hear anything at all. If you never been to an ice cave it's recommended. There i...  more »

  • After the long tour to the top of the mountain it was amazing to see the ice. Download the PDF from the page they suggest before getting down to the cave, because it will be easier to follow. The cave has a lot of stairs, so prepare for that too. I personally loved it. In my opinion the proper clothing pays off. So no matter how hot is outside bring some warm footwear and clothes with you.
  • Once you make a step from the gate, you are being hit by a very cold breeze. Be dressed property for a low temperature. The tour takes about 30-40min. Impressive cave especially the tunnels carved inside the ice. They only have guides that speak Slovak.
