Sri Mariamman Temple, Singapore

4.1
Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
A testament to immigrants from the Nagapatnam and Cuddalore districts of South India, Sri Mariamman Temple serves as the oldest Hindu temple in the country. Built in 1827 in the Dravidian style, the temple features a characteristic pyramid shape and stone construction. At one time it was the only temple authorized to solemnize Hindu marriages, and it played an important role as a social community space during the colonial era. The temple reveres the goddess Mariamman--goddess of curing illness and disease--and it hosts the annual fire walking ceremony. Ornate and elaborate, the temple is adorned by colorful depictions of deities, mythological beasts, and other beings. • We visited this Sacred Temple which is situated on South Bridge Road in the heart of Chinatown. It is rather difficult to miss with its ornate tower and it's tall street wall with statues of cows and a lion on top. Before entering the Temple, visitors are asked to remove their shoes. On entering the Temple we were struck by the vibrant coloured pillars and floral hanging decorations. The ceiling has been painted with colourful religious images and figures. Small, colourful, and beautiful worth a visit.
  • One of the oldest temple and since the day I was born it had been here. Over the years I had continuously taken photographs of it. I had went in to see the interiors. It is classic like most Hindu Temple. Once every year, there will be a celebration with procession and the highlight is walking over the fire. I guess that really challenge the faith in the individual and their commitment to their faith. The same fire walking is also the highlight of Antony Robins's motivational course held in huge auditorium good for thousands of people.

Message from Singapore Tourism Board

Singapore’s oldest Hindu temple was once a refuge for new immigrants, a dispute mediation venue and where marriage ceremonies were held for Hindus. Singapore’s oldest Hindu temple was rebuilt as Sri Mariamman Temple, dedicated to goddess Mariamman, who is believed to heal the sick. During the colonial period, it was a first refuge for new immigrants, a dispute mediation venue and where marriage ceremonies were held for Hindus. Travellers who visit in October-November may get to observe the Theemithi, which is the main festival observed here. Visitors can marvel at the temple’s six-tiered gopuram, or grand tower entrance. The visual treat continues with the temple’s elaborate interiors, featuring shrines with statues of different deities.
