Yusupov Palace, St. Petersburg

4.5
Formerly the official residence of an immensely wealthy family of art collectors and philanthropists, the stately Yusupov Palace remains best known for its role in the murder of Rasputin, the infamous "Mad Monk of Russia." Prince Felix Yusupov, once the richest man in the country, poisoned and shot Rasputin in the palace basement, which you can visit as part of a guided tour. The sumptuous palace interiors feature a blend of different styles, integrating period furniture and lavish tapestries with golden chandeliers and elaborate wall paintings. After you explore the basement crime scene, go up to the second floor, which features an elegant ballroom and an ornate private theater. • The place offers variously themed excursions and one can choose the most interesting one. I had a short overview excursion with a brilliant guide first and on a different day visited Rasputin's murder exposition with movies the latter one a visitor can do with its own pace, there is no guide, the movies tell it all. The mansion is really impressive, rooted so deeply in the Russian history, its decoration is stunning.
  • You line up on the street with many others among the parked vehicles, not a good start! Firstly you go in & out through dark small rooms & passageways & see everything about Rasputin's murder with graphic photo's & then wow you arrive in this wonderful palace with beautiful chandeliers & furnished rooms. Theres not one or two chandeliers but on every ceiling room after room has them. The family even had their very own theatre!
