Saint Isaac's Cathedral, St. Petersburg

4.8
#3 of 3,846 in Museums in Russia
Famous for its gold-plated dome, Saint Isaac's Cathedral features an observation deck offering arguably the finest views of the city. Built during the first four decades of the 19th century, the cathedral remains one of the largest Orthodox edifices in the world, its golden cupola dominating the city's skyline from a height of over 101 m (333 ft). Designated as a museum during the 1930s, the lavish interior features highly decorated granite and marble columns and pilasters. Pay special attention to the main iconostasis, framed by eight ornate columns of semiprecious malachite and lazurite stone. To reach the observation deck, climb the staircase winding its way around the drum of the dome. • It is considered as one the most sumptuous and grandiose of the churches of St. Petersburg. Completed in 1858, it is one of the most important neoclassical monuments of Russian architecture of the nineteenth century. It is located in the centre of the city, in the square of the same name, near Nevsky Avenue and the Hermitage Museum. It has one of the largest domes in the world and is the second highest Orthodox church in the world, 101.5 meters high, behind the Cathedral of Christ the Savior of Moscow that reaches 103 meters. Bring on the most beautiful location it gave me lots of photographs. Way too beautiful from inside. You are allowed to visit it from inside with a ticket of 400 rubles. If you are willing to watch city from its dome, yes you can but again it will cost you 400 rubles.
  • Breathtakingly beautiful. The English audio guide was very thorough (perhaps even too much detail). The climb to the top of the colonnade was well worth it.
