Wieliczka Salt Mine
Discover an underground world of dark pits and chambers made from salt at Wieliczka Salt Mine. A short drive southeast of Krakow, this mine, included on the World Heritage List, produced table salt continuously for over seven centuries. Operation finally shut down in 2007. Today you can see dozens of statues, chapels, and cathedrals exquisitely hand carved by generations of miners. An important national monument, the mine draws over a million domestic and foreign visitors each year. Entry is by guided tour only, so buy your tickets well in advance. Make Wieliczka Salt Mine a centerpiece of your Wieliczka vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Wieliczka online travel planner.

Firstly, be prepared for lots of stairs (800+) and a 3.5km walk underground. The journey begins via 380 steps straight down to the 1st level. You travel through history via rough hewn tunnels and... more »

Went to the salt mine with my wife who was very sweet about the whole experience. There were no bitter feelings about having to walk down one thousand steps. There was a souvenir shop down in the basement they sold salt stuff. Reasonable prices for the souvenirs. If you're single and you meet a nice partner you can get married in the mine. That's cool. If you're already married then you can go to church with your husband or wife.

The guide we got spoke excellent English and was very informative and polite. They've done a really superb job in making this very tourist friendly and very beautiful - spared no expense! A lot of history to the place and the guide was pretty in depth. Worth a visit definitely. Wasn't at all claustrophobic or cramped very spacious. There was a marvellous and huge church in the centre of the mines which created a certain ambience there. Reasonably priced and worth the money.
