Browse through stands with traditional pointed boots, caps, furs, and spices at Naran Tuul Market, Ulaanbaatar’s open-air market for clothes and accessories in the east part of town. You can get some traditional jackets, handcrafted footwear, Soviet coins, cashmere, and saddles, as well as browsing through the carpet section in the closed part of the market. Also known as the "Black Market," many nomads come here to trade material supplies. Immerse yourself in a real, down-to-earth Mongolian experience, but beware of pickpockets. You can bring home some distinctive memorabilia from this market located some 40 minutes by foot from the city center. Put Naran Tuul Market on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Ulaanbaatar road trip planning tool .

be aware of pickpockets. you have to negotiate to get a good price. some Mongolian words might be useful. don't say “yes“ too fast. overall you can find lots of clothes, shoes, gloves, blankets, deels, sunglasses, outerwear and child equipment.

"Black market" is an absurd way to describe this place. It's a normal open market full of small businesses selling handmade, Mongolian or imported products. Amazing in it's diversity, it has survived the boom of all the modern malls. Even the Sunday mall next door, although a lot more comfortable in winter, cannot compete with the prices, color, atmosphere and variety in the Narantuul. A must visit for everyone-tourist or returning local.
