Visit Kek Lok Si Temple, the largest Buddhist complex in Malaysia. Established at its hilltop location in 1891, the temple harmoniously combines architectural influences from across the region. Its main feature remains the impressive seven-story pagoda and its 10,000 alabaster and bronze statues of Buddha. The ample grounds include separate areas of relaxation and contemplation, with pools, ponds, and well-maintained, peaceful gardens. A venerated place of worship, the temple attracts pilgrims from across Southeast Asia and beyond. We weren't impressed to be honest.Lots of shops flogging tat. Apparently it's an important pilgrimage for Buddhists from Singapore, Hong Kong & the Philippines & from other southeast Asia countries..... more »
Spectacular from a distance but less impressive close up To ascend through the levels towards the top means buying tickets for short funicular train trips and passing through souvenir stalls and... more »
I’m a local here and the one time I decide to go here without a car it was a nightmare. This is a tourist trap and they’ll eat your money. How? So when you use the electric elevator or shoe box they have to get to the top. It only takes you 1/3rd of the ways then you find out you have to walk to the next one. With the heat and walking uphill they have a shuttle to the next elevator which also comes at a fee. Unknowingly it’s only maybe 50-100 meter walk to the next one. The next section all the way to the top is like that which each of their own fees even the elevator has its own fees. Great temple but this is how they make their money and it’s a trap you should to be aware of. Best bet try to pay a grab driver a little extra to take you to the top and elevator and avoid shuttles.
Absolutely amazing experience with so much culture! I went with a local guide during a cruise excursion and it was great to learn so much from her. It is SO hot, so bring water (or you can buy some there also). Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, there are several stairs! This is an absolute must see when you come visit Peneng!
