Statue de la Grande Duchesse Charlotte, Luxembourg City

Designed by a Parisian sculptor named Jean Cardot, Statue de la Grande Duchesse Charlotte was unveiled with the grand ducal's family looking on. The grand duchess ruled from 1919 to 1964. She played a particularly important role as a uniting symbol for Luxembourg during the German occupation in World War II. During that time, the duchess held regular broadcasts on the BBC and traveled to allied countries to gain international notoriety for Luxembourg. When she returned to her home country, she continued to host international dignitaries and live a public life with her people, which made her well-loved. The duchess' graceful posture in the statue, with one arm reaching out to the city, belies its solid bronze. • This statue is situated in a small square by the town center. The Duchess Charlotte was very much loved by the people, as she helped people during the war. This was officially opened in April 1990.  more »
