Palace of the Grand Dukes (Palais Grand-Ducal), Luxembourg City

4.0
#5 of 15 in Historic Sites in Luxembourg City
Palace of the Grand Dukes (Palais Grand-Ducal) features one of the most impressive facades in the city. Built as a city hall during the Flemish Renaissance, the palace suffered greatly during World War II--the Nazis destroyed much of the original furniture and decor and used the building as a tavern. Today, the grand interior is open for tours, but only during the summer. Check the website for dates and times. • I can't call it the main attraction. But the city is not so big that there were many of them. We walked past him more than once and did not immediately realize that it was him, and not part of the beautiful street in the center. In general, it is on the lists for mandatory visit even when visiting the city for 1 day. It's a pretty long building. You can get inside only at a certain time (we did not get). There is security in the booth at the main entrance (karaul), on it and realized that they found the attraction. It is difficult to find an angle to photograph it beautifully. It's a very stretched palace.

  • Situated on what is ostensibly a main shopping street, you suddenly come across this royal palace. Although flanked by guards, it feels very much part of the old town. Impressively maintained, althoug...  more »

  • Not as grand as palaces in other countries, but still very interesting to see, at least from the outside. The architecture is nice and it's pretty easy to reach from the main road. You can probably spend at most 10 minutes looking at it from the outside, but that's fine because there's other stuff to see nearby.
  • It was amazing to see the Grand Ducal Palace. There was lots of history and descriptions of the people in the paintings on the wall. You go through security and then need to leave backpacks at the entrance but they are well organized and guarded. You are not permitted to take any photos or to touch anything. Strollers are not allowed and young children must be carried.
