Located at the edge of old town Kaunas, Kaunas Castle represents a Gothic-style castle thought to have been built during the mid-14th century. The castle served as a strategic military outpost that guarded nearby cities and the roads between important trade routes. By the start of the 21st century, only approximately a third of the original castle remained intact. It was renovated in 2011, but some of the original walls remain. Climb the stairs to the upper levels for expansive views of the surrounding town and scenery. You can walk within the walls for free, or pay to go into the round tower where you'll find an art gallery. In 1410, the Battle of Grunwald took place in the country. The castle has lost its strategic importance. In those days, Prince Vitaut sometimes lived on the castle grounds, and also received guests there. After his death, Kaunas Castle was used as the residence of the head of the city of Kaunas. In the early 16th century, the castle was used as a prison. In the 19th century, the castle was divided into small areas and sold out. The ruins of the castle were particularly damaged in 1870, when it was allowed to use masonry to build a new highway and city streets. Was smaller than expected. Didn’t go up the castle for that reason (thought the view wouldn’t be as splendid) + didn’t want to pay for the entrance fee. But the castle from the outside was good enough for the visit.
