Learn about the history of and techniques employed at Suntory Yamazaki Distillery, Japan's first commercial distillery. Built in 1923 outside the country's former capital Kyoto, due to the favorable climate and access to clean water, the company went on to achieve the largest market share for a single malt whiskey in Japan. In the distillery's "whiskey library" displays 7,000 bottles of unblended malt whiskey. You can also take a tour around the distillery to see the processes in action. You'll have the opportunity to try whiskeys of 18, 21, 25, and 30-year vintage, and, of course, you'll also have the opportunity to purchase your favorites in the gift shop.     Short train ride from Osaka! Came with two other friends and knew exactly what we wanted. We did not tour the distillery instead went for the gift shop and tasting immediately. Gift shop was a bit.....  more »

    Make sure to book way ahead of time. Tour is short but interesting; photos are mostly allowed. Best part is the tasting that comes at the end. Can also linger around at bar afterwords, cash bar.

    Didn't make a booking and wasn't able to be admitted initially due to full capacity. I was approached within the free museum about an extra open space, which I happily accepted. The tour was great, and the tasting was truly something unique. Overall a great highly regarded experience, don't pass up on this if you are within the vicinity. Even so, I feel its worth travelling a far distance for.
