Ishibutai Tomb, Asuka-mura

#1 of 62 in Things to do in Asuka-mura
Cemetery · Historic Site
Behold the megalithic, ancient grave site of Ishibutai Tomb, believed to date back to the Asuka period (592-710 CE), and the burial site of Soga no Umako--member of the influential Soga clan and tireless proponent of Buddhism. Marvel at the construction techniques employed in hauling these gigantic boulders into their current configuration. Step into the inner chamber of the tomb and inspect the huge ceiling stones: one weighs 60 tons, the other an incredible 77 tons.
