Descent Of The Ganges, Mahabalipuram

Marvel at exquisitely carved elephants of Descent Of The Ganges, a monumental open-air World Heritage Site rock relief carved on two monolithic boulders. Measuring 29 by 13 m (96 by 43 ft), the carving depicts a descent of sacred River Ganges from heavens to earth led by King Bhagiratha and followed by a host of gods, half-humans, mythical creatures and animals. Indian rock cut sculpture at its best, this 7th century monument served as a shining example for many subsequent styles.
