Pangong Tso, Leh

See how nature crafted one of the most recognizable water-filled basins at the world's rooftop at Pangong Tso. This salty lake attracts swarms of tourists, however, people of foreign nationality require group permits accompanied by an accredited guide to visit. Explore the countryside near Chang La--the third-highest motorable mountain pass--and view or photograph the green, brown, and purple Himalayan backdrop. Witness how the lake, despite its saline traits, becomes frozen during winter (solid enough that you can walk across it). Visit the gala festival of ice skating and immerse yourself in the local culture of the native people. Nearby towns provide basic accommodation, but you can also bring a tent. • I visited this lake in the month of May but in my mind, it is just like a visited yesterday... The true feeling of the word FREEZE can be experienced when you visit Pangong Tso. Having said that, the vista of the lake is simply breathtaking and astonishing. The colour of the sky and the lake compliment each other with absolute perfection. I witnessed different shades of the blue on that day and with each every hour, the lake adorns another beautiful shade. Perhaps a poet or a writer might describe the place for what it is for I lack the talent. The serene beauty of the water and the mountain slopes cannot be portrayed with just mere English words. For that matter, I don’t think even a perfect camera lens would capture the raw magnetic beauty of the lake. I must say that this truly is one of Nature’s finest creation, like a beautiful tapestry adorning the earth. There are props from the infamous movie 3 Idiots near the shore to take some creative pictures. But the best way to experience the lake and it’s atmosphere is to stay the night in one of the tents. Though you would experience mind numbing cold and probably a headache but in the morning, you will be rewarded with a stupendous view. P.S. The Pangong Retreat Camp is a good place for an overnight stay. And also look out for the Himalayan Marmots on your way to Pangong.
  • Ladakh’s high-altitude lake is renowned for its startlingly blue waters that seem to shift color throughout the day. This must-visit long and narrow stretch of water extends into western Tibet – stroll along the southern shore to appreciate the sight of the snow-capped Pangong Range reflected in the water.
