Containing the site of the former parliament of Iceland, Thingvellir National Park serves as a historical landmark set in a beautiful landscape. Part of the Golden Circle, the park is one of the most visited attractions in the country. The national park was founded in 1930 to protect the former parliament, which dates to 930 CE, as well as the natural land surrounding it. Explore the park's highlights, including the Mid-Atlantic ridge, where the Eurasian and North American plates meet, and the largest natural lake in the country. The park has facilities for hiking, camping, and even scuba diving in Silfra Lake. Thingvellir National Park reviews
Nice park with a fall, little walk and nice church and the end. Enough parking places although it is quite crowdy on a nice sunny summer day. more »
Beautiful views over this National Park. As everyone has remarked, Pingvellir is an important historical and geological area. Iceland's first legal and judicial assembly was established here with... more »
It was beautiful went last week which meant it was all snowy. A bunch of us just a had a massive snowball fight which was very fun. It was very peaceful and nice to take in. Would recommend some kind of foot gear if you go in winter time though. It was VERY slippy!
As with any tourist location, the numbers were a little overwhelming, but that was probably due in a large part to the tours. The site offered free toilets, a cafe & gift shop, and then the ability to walk along several km of routes at this location of great history, and the border of the European and American plate. It looked wonderful in the snow, and I personally look forward to returning, perhaps with a rental car, during the summer or autumn months to see it in a different condition.
