Looking like an illustration from a book of fairy tales, Schloss Neuschwanstein stands perched on a mountain cliff. King Ludwig II of Bavaria commissioned this 19th-century palace. He paid for it out of his personal fortune rather than from public funds. It was intended as a refuge for the reclusive king, but it was opened to the paying public immediately after his death in 1886. Since then, more than 60 million people have visited, drawn by the picturesque location and romantic design. Constructed under the direction of architect Eduard Riedel, the building embodies the architectural fashion known as castle romanticism. You'll also note that it embraces Ludwig II's immoderate enthusiasm for the operas of his close friend Richard Wagner. Check the weather conditions before you plan your trip; misty conditions and rain often reduce visibility to almost zero at those heights. You can buy tickets online or at the ticket center in the village below the castle. PutSchloss Neuschwanstein into our Schwangau trip site and find out whats close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

Schloss Neuschwanstein Reviews
I'm glad I was able to cross off one of the great world landmarks from my bucket list and it is a beautiful building to behold in person, I'm actually quite surprised with how close it was to... more »
We visited with an organized day trip so they had pre-booked our entry time. The castle is up a steep hill and the walk up takes quite a while so we decided to take the bus up. The cost was low and.... more »
Weird, Gothic, cool. Went in the off-season, so we didn’t have to wait in insane lines. If you are going in the summer or early fall, plan to wait in line. A good day trip. Regardless of when you go, you’ll need to plan your trip a few days in advance. It’s best if you can reserve your tickets to tour the castle online at least 48 hours prior to your visit. I’d consider this essential if you’re going during peak time. The tour is brief—only about 30 minutes long. Completely worth the trip. Know that you’ll need to hike 30 minutes uphill to the castle, so dress accordingly. There’s also a horse and carriage up the mountain, but you’ll still need to do some more uphill walking where they drop you off. Personally, I enjoy the hike.
Gorgeous views around and inside castle. Fall colors are still there. The inside of the castle was very unique; no photography allowed though. The audio guide was very good. Loved how they timed the entrance so it never felt overcrowded. Just make sure to buy your tickets at least 2 days beforehand from the website if you are not going with a tour group!
