Stuck Villa (Jugendstil Museum), Munich

4.0
An outstanding example of an Art Nouveau interior, Stuck Villa (Jugendstil Museum) is a museum entirely devoted to the life and work of renowned artist Franz Stuck. Located in a historic mansion that was designed by Stuck and built in 1898, the museum now houses some of the artist's finest paintings. Stuck was deeply involved in every stage of the mansion's construction and decoration, even designing furniture, for which he won a gold medal at the 1900 Paris World Exposition. Though Stuck became known as the city's "prince of painters," many of his ardent admirers consider his most interesting and beautiful work the "Bronze Amazon," a sculpture now situated inside the museum's front portico. • On the 1st Friday of the month, Villa Stuck is open until 10 p.m. and admission is free from 6 p.m. We decided on the exhibition about photographers from the former GDR and took part in the guided tour for this part of Villa Stuck. The explanations on the background of the photographers and their pictures were very helpful and very well prepared/researched and were certainly a good addition to the exhibits. Overall a nice experience. A small minus point was the fact that in the evening an event took place in the museum café. However, it was not clear whether the cafe had opened or not. We sat in the cafe for almost 15 minutes without being served or getting information on whether the cafe is open or not. A bit more customer focus would have been desired here.

  • Maybe it was up to us and we would have expected more? The Villa Stuck now has in temporary setup a photo collection with little accessible art, the Art Nouveau section is very small. A ground floor with one room where some pictures hang out of what the interior looked like and in addition three more spaces. Little or no explanation, you have to guess why the villa has survived to a limited extent...

  • Great exhibition but restaurant food limited and tiny portions
  • This place is unique. Very particular interior and style. I was very impressed by all the details you can admire and one of the ceilings has an astronomical sign map made with gold details.
