In the early 19th century, Prince Ludwig of Bavaria commissioned architect Leo von Klenze to design a green, Neoclassical square--Konigsplatz--to serve as a cultural, administrative, and military center in Munich. Based on the Acropolis in Athens, and also known as King's Square, it is now home to the State Museum of Classical Art, St. Boniface's Abbey, and the Propylaea, based on the Acropolis's iconic gateway. You'll also find the Glyptothek museum, built to house Ludwig's collection of Greek and Roman sculptures. On the northwest side of the square, a copper and aluminum facade heralds the Lenbachhaus, an art museum housing many contemporary works, as well as paintings by iconic Munich artists like Jan Polach and Christoph Schwarz. The square itself is a popular place for both locals and visitors to sunbathe and socialize. • Konigsplatz is inspired by ancient Greece, as it was trendy in this time to build copying the old Greeks in order to show the high culture of your town - and yourself as true heirs of Green culture...  more »
  • It's a pretty square, very rich in history. I suggest going on whatever tour to make the most of you visit.  more »
