#104 of 558 in Things to do in Munich
An elegant monument perched on the banks of the Isar River, Angel of Peace (Friedensengel) was built to commemorate the 25 years of peace following the end of the Franco-Prussian war in 1871. The monument and its small temple show the portraits of several German emperors and notable figures in Bavarian history, including Chancellor Otto von Bismarck and General Helmuth von Moltke. The temple's interior is decorated with golden mosaics depicting the allegories of war and peace. The statue of the angel sits atop a 38 m (125 ft) Corinthian column, below which is a large fountain with dolphin-shaped waterspouts. For unobstructed view of the surrounding area, take one of two monumental staircases leading to an observation deck at the foot of the column.
