Three museums, each highlighting a different period of art, are housed at Alte Pinakothek. The museums are within walking distance of each other, so you can easily explore all three on foot or by bicycle. First, stop by one of the oldest art galleries in the country. It houses a collection of at least 800 masterpieces from the Middle Ages to the end of the Rococo period. Look for works by Durer, Rubens, and da Vinci, among others. Next, visit the gallery that displays about 400 paintings and sculptures from the 19th century. Highlights include works by Monet, Degas, and Renoir. Finally, explore the gallery opened in 2002 to display a vast collection of modern art. Here, you'll find notable pieces by Picasso, Kandinsky, and Warhol. Purchase a day ticket for all three museums online. Put Alte Pinakothek at the forefront of your travel plans using our Munich online day trip planner.

Alte Pinakothek Reviews
All was well until a staff member approached my wife and pointed out the size of her purse (after being in the museum for a couple hours). I told him, in German, my wife does not speak German. He... more »
Do take the Audio Guide. It helps explain each painting and each room as you step back into history. The paintings are stunning. Totally in awe of the talent 'way back then'. I closed the place! more »
There was a long queue for tickets on Sunday because it only costs €1 on Sundays. I couldn’t fine how to buy tickets online. I feel like there are many old school practice in Germany. They arrange rooms chronologically and each room is denoted to an artist. They have many rooms for Rubens. The description next to the paintings were very informative and educational. They talk about the technique, the layout, the colour, etc. Something you often only expect with a guided tour. They also had a special exhibition for Caravaggio inspired pairings. Unfortunately the guided tours were mostly in German. It’s interesting that you have to climb a long staircase to reach the exhibition level. Then there were two heavy wooden doors that you need to push by yourself to enter the exhibition rooms. Metaphorically you can think of it as a journey to the enlightenment. When you reach the top, you get all the good views.
I loved this museum. I was bummed I wasn't able to see the entire collection due to the renovations, but so happy for what was available. I loved it, and was deeply moved. Gorgeous stairway, windows especially at the right time of day. I can't wait to go back once it's the renovations have been completed.
