Trip Planner: Europe / Germany / Berlin / The Holocaust Memorial - Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe
One of the most moving and controversial sites in the world, The Holocaust Memorial - Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is a massive artwork, covering an entire city block. Designed by architect Peter Eisenman, it features nearly 3,000 concrete slabs arranged in a grid pattern on a sloping field. The work is meant to produce an uneasy, confusing atmosphere, and many liken it to an abstract representation of a cemetery. The slabs are approximately 2.4 m (7 ft) long, 1 m (3 ft) wide, and vary in height from 20 cm to 5 m (8 in to 16 ft). They start out at ground level on the outer edges of the memorial and grow taller towards the middle, where the ground slopes downwards. Look for the underground museum, which offers extensive details on the Holocaust and the people who died during it. The site attracts nearly 4 million visitors each year. The Holocaust Memorial - Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe reviews
Absolutely found this brilliant. Such a lovely very well designed monument. Such a very poignant memorial to the forgotten. It was very well done. Really felt over whelmed after my visit. Walked through the whole museum with quite a large crowd of people that had no connection and many nationalities but not a word or sound was made by any person. Everybody was so overwhelmed by what the saw and read. Well worth a visit. Add to the must sees, up there with the icon of checkpoint Charlie and the Brandenburg gate.
I think the fact that Germany have put such a place together, should be applauded. It is quite simple in many respects, but very clever in others. The basic history of what was done is covered, but the main difference from other memorials like this is how it has been personalised. It has a good number of historic accounts of what happened to families and individuals. All in both German and English. The outside is again simple. Most people treat it with respect, but there are still some who feel the need to climb on it.
