Catedral Metropolitana de Guayaquil, Guayaquil

4.3
Appreciate the remarkable sense of light and space you get standing inside Catedral Metropolitana de Guayaquil. Constructed between 1924 and 1937 to replace Guayaquil's original wooden cathedral (which burned down on the same site in 1692), the beige, twin-spired structure dominates the city center. With simple light-colored columns and arches that climb high to the cavernous ceiling, the cathedral seems remarkably airy. Admire the many stained glass windows, depicting famous religious scenes in dazzling color. • I can’t say the church is particularly astonishing, yet if you manage to take a look on it from the terraces of the houses nearby, it will look much better. There are often service, and it’s ok to walk in and join. Of course, they are in Spanish, but you can just stand there. Sometimes you may get distracted by “agua agua agua” calls from outside. Therefore, if you’d like to enjoy the mess, go further in. It’s also ok to check out the stained glass windows and the interior when there’s no service.
