Macquarie Lighthouse, Vaucluse

4.6
The Macquarie Lighthouse, also known as South Head Upper Light, was the first, and is the longest serving, lighthouse site in Australia. It is located on Dunbar Head, on the Old South Head Road, Vaucluse in the Municipality of Woollahra local government area of New South Wales, Australia. The lighthouse is situated approximately 2 kilometres (1 mi) south of South Head near the entrance to Sydney Harbour. There has been a navigational aid in this vicinity since 1791 and a lighthouse near the present site since 1818. The current heritage-listed lighthouse was completed in 1883. The lighthouse and associated buildings were designed by James Barnet and built from 1881 to 1883.

The lighthouse is fully operational and is under the control of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. The grounds are managed by the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust.
The lighthouse is featured on the coat of arms of Macquarie University. In 2008, the University introduced an official logo, described as an 'abstract, timeless image' of water lilies, as its public visual identity; use of the arms was subsequently restricted to official documents such as graduation testamurs and legal documentation.

The lighthouse and associated site were added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999 and to the Commonwealth Heritage List on 22 June 2004.

  • Its a lighthouse surrounded by a a big grassy park, its ok I walked past it yesterday. Maybe if you booked a tour and went inside, then it might be worth doing.  more »
  • A stately old lighthouse that is regally set atop a panoramic oceanfront path. The lighthouse is only open with special tours but the outside pathway is nice (no shade) alongside the ocean. We’re...  more »

  • 😍😍🤩😍😍There are a handful of iconic landmarks that are synonymous with some of the world’s greatest cities, and Sydney’s eggshell-shaped opera house is certainly one of them. Although the Sydney Opera House is the heartbeat of the city, Sydney has a wealth of other attractions to offer its visitors. The city is notorious for its renowned beaches (you’ve probably heard of Bondi Beach and Coogee Beach), its famed vineyards, beautiful outdoors (The Blue Mountains will blow your mind), energetic nightlife, and of course--its unique wildlife which can be enjoyed in one of the city’s acclaimed zoos. Sydney isn’t just an absolutely must-visit destination, it also offers easy access to the rest of Australia and nearby New Zealand. And in case you like it so much and think it could be a good place to relocate to, we have good news for you! Sydney is regularly ranked amongst the top cities in the world to live in.
  • Definitely one of the most prettiest lighthouses I have seen. When you reach the gap head north to reach here. The walk through trail is as pretty as the lighthouse itself. And there's a huge ground adjacent to it (perfect for a Sunday picnic).
