Queen Victoria Building, Sydney

4.5
Queen Victoria Building offers an architectural delight: an extravagantly detailed shopping center from Australia's late colonial period amidst the gleaming modernity of downtown Sydney's skyscrapers. From the outside, admire the Romanesque Revival facade that American architect Henry Hobson Richardson employed throughout the city in the last decade of the 19th century. Observe the large copper-sheathed central dome, cupolas on the corners of the roof, and columns all along the exterior walls. Inside, see stained-glass windows, arched skylights by the central dome, colonnades, and balustrades. And the shopping isn't half-bad in here either. • The nicest and grandest place to shop and eat in Sydney. The Victorians certainly knew how to design a beautiful building- magnificent stained glass and glass dome. Quirky clocks with a display every hour with a diorama of English history, including the beheading of Charles I! It’s a joy to shop in the varied collection of stores.
  • Why do I always get confused walking through this place? The historical significance is huge representing an icon from our past but trying to fit 21st century retail into such a space doesn't seem to gel with me somehow. Add the electronic signage and modern advertising to an early 1900s style is a bit forced. Still it's a pleasant place and you will admire the architecture and wow at the wear on the stairs as you change levels. Food wise there are some decent cafes and snacks available but part of me prefers a big sprawling shopping center if I want to do this kind of shopping.
