The Blue Lake, Mount Gambier

Take your time to walk around cobalt blue The Blue Lake, located in an extinct volcanic crater. You will be rewarded with spectacular view of the lake from various aspects. The lake color ranges from shimmering blue in summer to steely gray in winter. The color changes are most likely due to calcite crystals in the water.   • We decided to go and see the lake when we went to visit Mount Gambier. Well worth it. We came in winter but the weather was amazing. We walked the entire 4km around the lake and it was so lovely. Do....  more »

  • If you’re in the area, definitely worth the trip to Mt Gambier to see the unique Blue Lake. It has a deep blue colour from November to April, when it slowly turns back to gray before turning back to deep blue again. It’s a natural phenomenon not yet explained by science so this makes it more intriguing. The lake is about 72 meters deep and is used for potable water. Mt Gambier is a beautiful and clean small town. Spent a few days if you can
  • This is a must see attraction in Australia, its so breathtaking that you will stare at it for hours, It turns blue during summer, so plan accordingly. Lots of things to do in the region so do your research before coming. the Big4 caravan park near the blue lake is a very convenient location to stay. They have a campground and cabins for rent.
