City Square, Melbourne

2.8
A vibrant, animated plaza at the heart of the city of Melbourne, the main draws of City Square are its historic buildings and lively atmosphere. One of the centers of city life in Melbourne, the square was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1980 after decades of arduous planning. The square serves as home to a number of curiosities, including the John Mockridge Fountain and a cast bronze statue of a dog titled Larry La Trobe. • Yes you are in the center and there are lots of people about, hustling and bustling. But it's not that pretty, so no one lingers.  more »
  • This is no more until the Metro Tunnel is finished and you can just look through the glass and see how the Metro Tunnel is going. The City Square is closed hopefully after the Metro Tunnel is complete...  more »

  • The City square motel doesn't have the bells and whistles of a luxury 5 star resort or the big chains. But that's not why you stay there. You're there because you want a cheap, clean room for a night or two. Check in, shower, sleep and check out. If that's all you're looking for you won't be disappointed.
  • Optimal location, receptionist very obliging and helpful. Room was smaller than I expected (I should've known upon booking that 15 square m is only a matchbox), but it contained everything I needed - microwave, electric kettle, fridge, TV, iron, free toiletries, etc. Bed was quite comfy. Good wifi - no limit of data usage. I was able to watch videos / video chat with my family, which was awesome. One down side was that one of the windows could not be closed, unable to keep out noises from the streets. Also the windowsills were quite dusty, seems like ages since they were last cleaned. No heater, a bit nippy at night. Stains on the bed linen and pillow took away a perfect good impression. Tired furniture, could be better maintained. Overall worth the price, and recommended for solo traveller for a short stay in Melbourne.
