Cinema Nova, Melbourne

3.9
Cinema Nova was established in August 1992 as a collaboration between two landmark Australian independent cinemas – the Longford Cinema in South Yarra and the Valhalla Cinema in Richmond and Westgarth, and opened as a twin theatre.

Since that time we’ve grown to become one of the biggest independent cinemas in the southern hemisphere, with 16 theatres showing the best in quality indie, Australian and arthouse film. An essential part of the Lygon Street scene, Cinema Nova is a part of Carlton’s cultural fabric and offers Melbourne more than any other cinema.

Our Meet the Filmmaker and curated events programs allow our audience to experience film up close and personally, while also making going to the cinema an exciting event.

From our famous house-made choc tops, voted the best in Melbourne by The Age, to our Nova Bar + Kitchen, and our indulgent Nova Deluxe and High Tea in-cinema dining sessions, you can combine your love of cinema with the best in food and beverages.

Cinema Nova: where there is more on screen, more choice, more to enjoy.

  • Welcome to the art house complex for film! Do you feel like getting all dressed up as an ode to being artsy? In the mood to watch a widely reviewed festival film? How about catching that movie you've had on your radar and it just so happens that it's not showing anywhere else, but Cinema Nova? What about that moment you just wanted to watch a movie make it a little bit better with some vino and a homemade choc top? Yes, yes! You can do all this and more when you come on down to Cinema Nova! No, this isn't the type of theater that feels the need to keep with the times trying to impress the audience with the wows of modern cinema. This cinema is too cool to even care that others are competing with each other. Cinema Nova sits back and does it's own thing. The hipster of cinemas, if you will. It smirks at the idea of fancy reclining seats, shrugs off allocated seating, laughs in the face of extra leg room, and rolls it eyes to 567000 surround sound systems. All Cinema Nova calls for is simple, film goers and what going to movies used to be all about, film. It's a classic theater and will continue to stay that way and stand it's ground, the exact way cinemas should be, focusing all about what's on the screen.
  • We got tickets for Nova Deluxe as a gift. It was the best movie experience we've ever had. April, who worked in Deluxe, was fantastic. The food was delicious. I could not fault it. Well worth paying extra for Deluxe. I look forward to our next movie at Nova.
