Sovereign Hill, Ballarat

4.4
Ever wondered what it's like to be a miner in a gold rush? Sovereign Hill recreates the experience for you. This open-air museum in Golden Point presents the area as it was after prospectors discovered gold there in 1851. As you stroll down Main Street, stop into the historically rendered metal workshops, schools, apothecary, bank, saloon, and post office and speak with historical interpreters dressed as townsfolk and prospectors from long ago. Tents and buildings invoking this past era surround the creek, where you can pan for real gold. See how to melt gold into bullion bars at the Gold Pour. You might even strike it rich, paying for your entire vacation! Put Sovereign Hill and other Ballarat attractions into our Ballarat trip planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • We had a wonderful time at this venue. Friendly staff assisted our Japanese students. Hope Bakery is a must for lunch. Gold panning was very enjoyable. The new playground for children near the cafe...  more »
  • This has got to be the best gold mine to visit, amazing to see a whole township still alive and the ability to go underground into gold mine and learn all about the struggles the miners had.  more »

  • Amazing day at Sovereign Hill exploring the town. you can easily spend a day here. Good for kids as well as elders. Character guides very good. Very informative tours. You will fell step back in 1800s. Would highly recommend visiting this unique place.
  • The staff are very informative and friendly. There are around 150 volunteers which I think is great as you're getting information from people who care and are enthused about the history. Clean facilities. A great place for the whole family for a day to a day and a half. They do quite a few demonstrations. I'd recommend seeing the following: - Gold Pour. Shown step by step how the pour out pure gold. - Candle making process. Shown step by step how they make/ made candles back in the mining days. - Candy Making. Again step by step on how they make the candy. This is not a remake of an old store this place is actually a continuation of a company that started back in the 18 hundreds. The only things I did not like here was that the horse and cart didn't stop.. I know the horse breed is a working horse but 30 degrees today and they were pulling tourists up the hill non stop and we did not see them have a drink at all in the time we were here and also there could be a bit more shade areas for the other animals on site. But other than that it was a fantastic day :)
