Trip Planner: South Pacific / Australia / Northern Territory / Red Centre / Alice Springs / Adelaide House Museum
Adelaide House was the only medical centre in Central Australia until the opening of the hospital in 1939 and, at its peak, catered for a population of 950 people.Plan your visit to Adelaide House Museum and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Alice Springs trip maker app.
Since 1939 it has been used variously as a hostel, as accommodation for nurses during the war, a manse for the Presbyterian Church and a meeting place for church groups. It was restored in 1983 and is now a museum of local history.
A radio room at the back of the building is where the first test radio transmission was received from Hermannsburg by Maurie Fuss in November, 1926, when Flynn and Alf Traeger were experimenting with radio for the Flying Doctor Service. The museum has some fine displays including the story of the Australian Inland Mission, early journals, maps and publications of the Reverend John Flynn, radio equipment built by Traeger, diagrams of the building and its unique concept, and an extensive collection of historic photographs.
Closed to visitors between Dec. and early March.

Nothing really to see inside (that is, if you can make it to the unbelievably short opening time slot), other to appreciate the pretty house in this dilapidated area.

This is a must see, along with the neighbouring Uniting Church. It gives an excellent context behind the founding of 'the Alice', the Flying Doctor, and School of the Air. It shows how early pioneers dealt with the complexities of living and working in Central Australia, and provides a good understanding of the role of The Rev Dr Flynn and the Presbyterian Church of Australia in opening up Central Australia as well as caring for the comminities around Alice Springs and throughout northern Australia. It is an eye-opener for non-territorians.
